Wordle Hard Mode: Should NZ Players Switch It On?

Updated: 25 May 2026 · Reading time: 4 minutes

Buried in the Wordle® settings menu is a toggle marked “Hard Mode”. Most Kiwi players never notice it. Some flick it on by accident and curse themselves for the rest of the week.

What is Wordle® Hard Mode?

Normal Wordle® lets you guess any valid five-letter word. You can ignore the colour feedback if you want.

Hard Mode adds one rule: any letter you’ve revealed as green or yellow MUST be used in every subsequent guess.

That’s the only difference. No time limit, no extra-obscure words, just one rule that removes a tactical option.

How to turn Hard Mode on (or off)

  1. Open Wordle® on the NYT site.
  2. Click the gear icon (settings) top right.
  3. Toggle Hard Mode on or off.

You can switch between puzzles. But you can’t switch ON mid-puzzle once your guesses don’t satisfy the rule.

Why Hard Mode actually makes most players worse

Counter-intuitive but true: Hard Mode prevents one of the most powerful strategic moves — the test word.

What’s a test word?

Candidates after guess 2: GRAPE, GRAVE, GRADE, GRACE. In normal Wordle® you could play POACH to test whether C is in the answer. POACH uses none of your known greens/yellows but tells you instantly which candidate is correct.

In Hard Mode, you can’t play POACH. You’d have to use G, R, and your yellows. You’re forced to commit with 25% odds.

The maths

2023 statistical analysis of 10,000+ Wordle® plays: Hard Mode players solve 0.3 guesses LATER on average. They also lose 4 percentage points more puzzles.

When Hard Mode IS worth it

1. You want to feel “more honest”

Some competitive Kiwi groups feel a Normal-mode win is hollow. Hard Mode keeps everyone playing the same constrained game.

2. Building letter-placement intuition

Hard Mode forces you to think about WHERE each known letter goes. New players who switch for 2-3 weeks see a permanent boost in placement intuition.

3. Sharing with Hard Mode friends

The share grid shows an asterisk after your score in Hard Mode. Some friend groups only count Hard Mode solves as “real” wins.

When NOT to use Hard Mode

  • Streak chasers. Hard Mode breaks streaks more often.
  • Beginners. Use the first month to learn basic patterns. Switch in month 2.
  • If you use hints from sites like ours. Some hints push you toward test-word guesses that violate Hard Mode rules.

What Kiwi players say

Informal poll of NZ Wordle® groups:

  • ~15% use Hard Mode regularly.
  • ~20% tried it and switched back.
  • ~65% never used it or didn’t know it existed.

“Tried and switched back” is the largest dropout. Most find the constraint makes the game less fun.

FAQ

Q: Does Hard Mode change the puzzle? No. Same daily word.

Q: Will switching modes affect old streak? No.

Q: Can I use hints in Hard Mode? Yes — but check that suggestions don’t violate Hard Mode rules.

Q: Why don’t all clones have Hard Mode? Most don’t bother implementing it.

The takeaway

For most Kiwi players, Hard Mode makes Wordle® more frustrating without making it more fun. Stay in Normal Mode unless you specifically want the constraint, want to compete with Hard Mode friends, or want to break a strategy habit.
